MOUNTAIN BIKING AROUND THE CLOCK IN GRABOUW

Presented by Spur Steak Ranches

Dirtopia will be presenting the tenth annual 24Hour team relay mountain bike event at Oak Valley Estate in Grabouw from 12h00 on Saturday 21 January 2012.

It will be the second year this great venue will be used and facilities will be improved from 2011.  Oak Valley is situated just off the N2 in the Elgin Valley, which is a popular mountain bike destination. The 24 Hour format is unique as it combines endurance- and night-riding, while camping with fellow riders & friends over a weekend. It is a very social event and builds camaraderie between teammates and riders, like few other events do…

The sporting part of a 24hour mountain bike event revolves around a massive relay, where solo riders or teams of four riders compete to ride as many laps as possible in a 24-hour time frame. The 24Hours of Oak Valley event will also have a fun category for teams between 5-8 riders. The official categories for teams would be: Open Men, Open Women, Open Mixed [at least 1 of both genders], Schools [aged between 16 and 18 representing a high school].  There is also a “One Four Zero” category – the collective ages of the 4 riders must be more than 140 years!

Entryfees are between R175 and R360 per rider – depending on category & date of entry.  The lap distance will be approximately 9km with lots flowing singletrack.  Easy enough for beginners, but challenging enough when you have ridden for a few hours!. The new route will feature less climbing than the Wiesenhof course but to compensate the lap has been lengthened and we expect the fastest laps to be in the 25 min range. Riders will do an anti clockwise circuit with a mix of the lower Oak valley trails. At night the lights are mounted on bikes and helmets and the course will get a different feel.

If you can't make the full 24hours, join them on the course on Sunday from 09h00 to 12h00 and take part in the 3Hour challenge. This separate event runs on the same course with the same rules as the 24Hour, but results count only for the last three hours of the race. Riders will be able to enter on the day for the 3Hour event only.

Spectators will pay a R20 day fee to enter the venue and extra campers will pay R50 for Saturday night, but official support crew (two per team or Solo) are allowed to camp free.
There will be warm showers, flushing toilets, drinks & food for sale.  Bring the kids – they’ll love playing on the lawns.  Campsite are not reserved, but first come, first served basis.
