Cape’s oldest mountain bike event promises family fun The Spur Lourensford MTB Classic is the oldest funride on the Western Cape calendar and still one of the favourites on the calendar. This year the organizers from Dirtopia has made sure the whole family can enjoy the spring day at this beautiful Estate in Somerset West on the 2nd of October. The Lourensford Farmers’ Market will be running from 09h00 with lots of stalls with fresh produce, meals, wine tasting, kiddies rides, crafts and more. Title sponsor, Spur Steak Ranches will also have their jumping castles, entertainment and great food at the finish surrounded by orchards. The 15km forms part of the International Mountain Bike Association’s (IMBA) ‘Take a kid mountain biking day’, to provide parents the opportunity to share an enjoyable ride with their children. Should mom & toddler look for something different, there is always the 4km run/walk that circles on the Estate. For the more serious & fit mountain biker, the 57km offers a tough challenge on the slopes of the Lourensford Basin. The 30 km route is for intermediate riders and can also offer a rewarding challenge to newcomers; to show what mountain biking is all about. The first 1000 finishers will receive a wineglass with kiddies getting something too! Riders should make sure they stay for the lucky draw after prizegiving, as there is a mountain bike to be won worth R4000 sponsored by local bikeshop, Cycle Addiction. The routes: The 57km has been tested by real mountain bikers and has varying terrain and surfaces. From the start the route switchback with climbs to the 12km point called “Hoenderpoot” that offers spectacular views of the sea & mountains. The climb is rewarded with fun downhills for around 6 kilometers that should put a smile on faces! Another steady climb will take them to a beautiful 3km singletrack section with colourful fields of flowers. Then over the Amandelbridge to a steep singletrack section of 500m to the highest point on the route. Fast & flowing roads for 5km to the portage at Lourensrivier and then a 3km fast downhill with sharp turns and a rocky section to test some skills. A 4km singletrack climb through the Bloekombos to the second highest point where riders can again enjoy the views. The next 8km downhill over Rooiberg towards the Bluegum singletrack - a technical, but flowing piece that will be loved by any mountain biker! Another fast section takes you to the last 2km of singletrack at Kanariesbos and then the finish is downhill all the way. The 30km route will follow the long route to the 18km mark before Amandelbridge. These riders will also see the great views of ocean & sea. From there riders will follow flowing roads & downhills to Binksburgdam, then Kanariesbos and down to the finish. The 15km stays on the lower part of the mountain and provides a good day on a mountain bike for beginners & children.
